UNSC draft resolution calling for an end to the fighting in Sudan

The UN Security Council voted, on Monday, on a draft resolution calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Sudan.
The draft resolution, which was highlighted by “AFP”, and prepared by the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone, calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and to engage in good faith in a dialogue towards an end to the escalation, with the aim of agreeing to a ceasefire urgently throughout the country. The Rapid Support Militias have been accused of crimes against civilians, preventing humanitarian access and using starvation methods against millions of civilians.
About 11.3 million people have been displaced as a result of the war, including nearly 3 million, outside Sudan, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which described the situation as a humanitarian “disaster”.
About 26 million people are facing severe food insecurity, and famine has been declared in Zamzam camp in Darfur. In the same context, the draft resolution calls for “respect for the commitments” made in 2023 to protect civilians and allow humanitarian access “fast, safe and unimpeded.”
British Foreign Secretary David Lamy, who will chair the council’s meeting on Monday, said he would “compress to issue a decision to ensure the protection of civilians and the freedom of aid to pass.”
