Discussion on UNITAMS Assessment

The friend media platform has organized a session to evaluate the ongoing development and assessment of the United Nations Assistant Transition Mission to Sudan (UNITAMS).
Leader of the Sudanese Communist Party (S.C.P) Siddiq Kablo confirmed that the Communist Party welcomed the mission to provide technical assistance during the transition period until the elections. He added, saying that the Communist Party has opinions and positions regarding the mission’s tasks, commenting that the mission did not fail in its tasks, rather it did not find enough time to deliver all the responsibilities of the mission. He added that there are three visions and opinions all of which are different from the presence of the mission, including “supporters, opponents. He pointed out that the reasons for failure are that the mission does not have direct integrated coordination with the UNGA.
Engineer Hisham Al-Shawani, the spokesman for the Call of the People of Sudan, indicated that the mission was the decision of former Prime Minister Hamdok without duo consolations with external parties. He explained that the mission’s tasks include providing technical support, protecting civilians in conflict areas, promoting and providing aid.
Furthermore, he stressed that the mission couldn’t provide aid and assistance to civilians in Darfur and conflict areas”, but rather the conflict intensified and fighting renewed in these areas. In conclusion, he added, “The choice is the Sudanese people’s choice, whether to renew or expel the mission”. On 3 June, the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 25/24 (2020), establishing the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), a special political mission, to provide support to Sudan for an initial 12-month period during its political transition to a democratic rule.
On 3 June 2023, the council unanimously adopting resolution 2636, (2022) (to be issued as document S/RES/2636(2022)), it also requested the Secretary-General to continue to report to the Council every 90 days on the implementation of the UNITAMS mandate.
