Undersecretary of Foreign Ministry Meets Burundi Delegate to African Union

the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Daffallah Al-Haj Ali, has today, Sunday, February 5, 2023, met with Ambassador Willy Namitwe, Burundian delegate to the African Union, member of the Peace and Security Council, and also met with Ambassador Mohamed Al-Aroushi, representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the African Union, member of the Council.
His Excellency gave an explanation of the current developments in Sudan following the signing of the framework agreement and the endeavors made to reach the final goals of the political process,
His Excellency affirmed Sudan’s keenness to link up and communicate with the members of the Peace and Security Council in a way that enables them to know what is happening in the political arena in Sudan, and the Undersecretary urged the member states of the Council to engage Constructively with the Government of Sudan and participate positively in supporting the democratic transition.
His Excellency pointed out that the imposition of sanctions and coercive measures is inconsistent with the spirit of the principle of African unity and solidarity enshrined in the term of reference of the African Union and the Organization of African Unity since the generation of the founding fathers, which calls for unity, interdependence and maintaining all in one family that exchanges experiences and contributes to solutions to crises.
His Excellency pointed out that keeping a country like Sudan, with its capabilities, expertise, and role in the region and on the continent outside the African decision-making frameworks, is a great loss, and added that the experiences of sanctions, even at the level of the United Nations experience, do not help in solutions and impede a smooth transition.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded that countries that have issues before the African Peace and Security Council not be prevented from addressing it and providing their briefing, in analogy to the (Arias) formula known in the United Nations Security Council, which provides an opportunity to hear the voice of non-member states that have issues pending before the council,
Mr. Undersecretary noted that the decision to freeze Sudan’s activity was issued before sending a fact-finding delegation to speak with the Sudanese authorities following the statement of October 25, 2021.
On a related development , Mr. Undersecretary spoke with Mr. Warqna Qbeihu, Executive Secretary of IGAD, who will participate in the session of the African Peace and Security Council tomorrow, February 6th, and it was assured from their part that the Council would share the spirit and text of the statement of the ministerial conference of the organization that was recently held in Khartoum with regard to the political process in Sudan.
For their part, the delegates of the member states of the African Peace and Security Council, who were met by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed their thanks to his Excellency, and Sudan’s keenness to communicate with them to explain the developments, in a manner that helps assessing the situation comprehensively
