The Sudanese Foreign Ministry expressed condolences to each of Turkey and Syria on the victims of the major earthquake that hit the southern parts of Turkey and the northern parts of Syria besides other east eastern Mediterranean countries.
It is worth noting that a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and Syria early on Monday (Feb 6), killing at least 1,200 people as they slept, levelling buildings, and sending tremors that were felt as far away as the island of Cyprus and Egypt.
In Turkey, at least 912 people were killed and more than 5,000 people were injured, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday.
Erdogan said it was the country’s largest disaster since 1939, adding that 2,818 buildings collapsed as a result.
In Syria, at least 326 people were killed and more than 1,000 people injured, state news agency (SANA) quoted a senior health official as saying on Monday.
The toll reported by state media is thought to include only those living in government-held areas.
The head of Syria’s National Earthquake Centre, Raed Ahmed, told pro-government radio that this was “historically, the biggest earthquake recorded in the history of the centre”.
The quake wiped out entire sections of major cities in a region filled with millions of people who have fled the civil war in Syria and other conflicts.
