National Human Rights Commission partakes in ACERWC workshop

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took part in a workshop organized by the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) in collaboration with the Network of African National Human Rights Insinuations(NANHRI) on implementation of resolutions and recommendations of the committee held in Nairobi, Kenya during February 23-24.
The committee aimed to raise awareness of nature of the committee’s work and determine the mechanisms and roles which could be played by the national human rights institutions through participation with the committee to encourage Implementation of its resolutions and recommendations as well as exchanging the best practices and experiences.
Director of International Relations at NHRC, Nahla Al-Sir Salih made an intervention during the workshop session in which she outlined the jurisdictions of the commission in relation to protection and promotion of human rights according to the NHRC Act, 2009 in addition to its activities in area of protection and promotion of the rights of the child.
She also reviewed some issues raised by the committee for discussion and affirmed the Commission’s full readiness to cooperate with the committee through engagement of the active parties of the executive authorities and civil society organizations operating the field of the rights of the child.
The workshop has come out with a number of recommendations, the most important of which are the necessity of the national institutions exerting endeavors to follow- up implementation of resolutions and recommendations of the regional mechanisms, including the ACERWC, which have been referred to the countries and not considered by them and giving priority to prevention of violations against children and the necessity of engagement of children in programs and activities carried out by the national human rights institutions.
The Committee also recommended that the national human rights institutions should obtain accreditation from the ACERWC.
