Compensations and Reparation Are the Most Important inputs to Darfur Recovery, Minnawi Affirms

Governor of Darfur Region, Minni Arko Minnawi, called on donors to fulfill their obligations towards the implementation of the Juba Sudan Peace Agreement (JPA) to create conditions for the return of the displaced and refugees in the region to their areas and to implement development projects.

Minnawi said that the main reason for the delay in development in the region is the failure in empowering the  regional transitional government to provide resources for the development of the region, stressing the need to strengthen that role.

He stressed that compensation and reparation are the most important inputs for recovery and societal peace.

“Financial resources must be provided from donor countries and charitable funds, or resources must be allocated from within” he added

Minnawi noted that the regional government has formed committees that included the IDPs and refugees, and is now in the process of evaluating the workshops that were held in the voluntary return areas in both “Kabkabiya and El-Sarif” in the coming period, pointing to the regional government’s communication with the IDPs and refugees in all camps in the five states.

He revealed the formation of repatriation committees in the seven refugee camps in eastern Chad, stressing the serious desire of the refugees to return to their areas thanks to the programs and plans of the regional government that it followed in preparation for their return to their areas to contribute to development.
