about us
Preface:
It is known Sudan is a vast country with diverse cultures and climates, but despite all of its riches, historical and geographical significance, its true face is yet to be unveiled due to the scarcity of information available to the international network on social developments, the ancient cultural heritage, ethnic and religious diversity, coexistence and harmony among its components. Many people are yet to discover Sudan’s geopolitical, agricultural and industrial aspects for the country has been crippled by security and political conflicts.
Newspapers published in foreign languages – English and French – are limited or almost rare in terms of form, content and continuity for various reasons. Recently, the need for getting acquainted with Sudan has increased, especially in the aftermath of a change in political power, which necessitated investment in this climate in the interest of the nation, its stability, economic growth and political development, by creating professional media platforms and forums to disseminate credible and high-quality information in a more professional and in-depth analysis on Sudan and its African regional surroundings (South Sudan – Ethiopia – Eritrea – Uganda – Kenya, Chad – Central Africa – Libya and Egypt) in addition to the Red Sea region as a vital waterway.
The ongoing unrest, conflicts, political, and social transformations have direct local and global repercussions, in addition to global issues related to (climate change, food shortages, wars, pandemics, and epidemics, which culminated in conflicts, population movement, immigration, cross-border crime, – drugs and human trafficking and terrorism.
As a result of the lacking a national media platform to provide accurate information to satisfy the public and interests, many resorts to outside sources for information, whether Arab and international mainstream media, whose agenda – unquestionably – is to serve their vested interests, institutions or shape the national public opinion, which I turn is feeding the ongoing unrests and posing threat to the national security. The aforementioned reasons necessitated setting up a well-established, free, professional, and independent media to fill the gap and address both foreign and home readers in the coming days.
Objective & reasons behind the revival of The Citizen:
Sudan has been lacking an English media outlet since the previous Sudan Vision newspaper, which used to be the sole English newspaper at the time, with whose absence, organizations lost an important source for news, analysis, opinion columns, and debates to measure public opinion, which prompted us to publish in English to meet those needs.
Furthermore, there’s also a lack of an English electronic version, bar the daily bulletin of the Sudan News Agency and the monthly Sudanow newspaper, both of which do not fulfill the required purpose, as they are lacking in investigative reports, interviews, reports on specific occasions and events regarding the activities of foreign embassies, international, regional and national organizations operating in the country.
