Al-Burhan to Participate in the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly

Head of the Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, will deliver Sudan’s address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday morning, September 24, according to the preliminary list of speakers issued by the United Nations.

The 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 81) will open on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The first day of the high-level general debate will be on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.

The UN General Assembly is the principal policy-making body of the United Nations. It comprises all member states and provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion on all international issues covered by the UN Charter. Each of the 193 UN member states has an equal vote.

The UN General Assembly also makes key UN decisions, including:

Appointing the Secretary-General upon the recommendation of the Security Council.

Electing the non-permanent members of the Security Council.

Approving the UN budget.

The Assembly holds regular sessions from September to December each year, and thereafter as needed. Specific issues are discussed through dedicated agenda items or sub-items, leading to the adoption of resolutions.
