Biodiversity: The Journey of Life on Earth – May 22, World Biodiversity Day

Scientists believe that in the early days of the planet, about three to four billion years ago, the oceans were filled with a mixture of simple chemicals (water, carbon dioxide, methane, and ammonia).

Over time, chemical reactions and energy from volcanoes, lightning, and the sun created what is known as the “primordial soup,” the environment in which life likely began.

At some point, an extraordinary molecule appeared with a rare ability: to make copies of itself.

Tiny building blocks in the surrounding environment attached to it in a specific order, creating a new copy identical to the original.

The two copies then separated, and each began to repeat the process.

These may have been the first beginnings of what later became genetic material (genes) and the molecules that control the functions of life within cells (proteins).

But the replication process wasn’t always perfect; small errors occurred during the replication and copying process. These errors, though seemingly minor, were crucial because they produced slightly different versions of the original.

Over millions of years, these differences accumulated, giving rise to new forms and methods of survival and adaptation. This marked the beginning of biodiversity and the emergence and evolution of life on Earth.

As evolution continued, organisms emerged that could withstand drought, while others thrived in seas, forests, or mountains.

Some plants developed thorns for protection, and some animals acquired speed, toxins, or intelligence. Each species represents a different solution to the problem of survival in a particular environment.

This is how biodiversity arose; the culmination of billions of years of natural experimentation that shaped the web of life on Earth. Every living species carries within it a long story of adaptation and resilience.

This diversity is of immense value to both humanity and nature; it maintains ecological balance, provides food and medicine, and protects soil, water, and climate. Even the diverse ecosystems, from forests and deserts to coastlines, depend on this intricate interconnectedness of organisms. But this diversity is more threatened today than ever before due to deforestation, pollution, climate change, overhunting, and urban sprawl.

When a species becomes extinct, it’s not just the loss of a single organism, but the loss of an entire evolutionary journey that took millions of years to develop.

Therefore, celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22nd is not merely an environmental occasion, but a reminder that protecting living organisms is, in essence, protecting the history of life itself and safeguarding the shared future of all living beings on this planet.

Finally, it’s important to note that this presentation is based on some of the scientific explanations prevalent in evolutionary biology regarding the origin of life and biodiversity, inspired in part by the work of Richard Dawkins and other biologists.

This scientific approach aims to explain natural phenomena from a biological perspective, without delving into metaphysical or theological issues related to the origin of creation and the existence of life, which remain a domain of philosophical and religious contemplation and faith.
