Sudan to Step Towards Eliminating Trachoma by 2030

The Federal Minister of Health, Prof. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, attended the high-level meeting of the Trachoma Elimination Program in Sudan in Port Sudan, with the participation of the Ministers of Health from the Red Sea, Gedaref, and White Nile states, which are still registering active cases of the disease and have control programs in cooperation with the Carter Center.

The meeting was also attended by Dr. Sarah Lavinia, Director of the Carter Foundation’s office in Sudan; Dr. Angelia Sander, Program Director at the Foundation; and Dr. Razan, Director of Neglected Diseases at the Federal Ministry of Health. The attendees discussed the efforts made within a national plan aimed at eliminating the disease once and for all by 2030, using all interventions represented in surveys, health education for personal hygiene, the use of preventive medicines, and surgical camps for advanced cases before the blindness stage. This is within the framework of cooperation between the Federal Ministry of Health and international partners.

The meeting stressed the importance of strengthening control programs and intensifying fieldwork in the affected states in order to ensure the achievement of the national goal of eradicating trachoma in the coming years, which was delayed due to the war, as the previous plan was set for 2025.
