Cairo and the UN Discuss the Sudan Crisis

The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, is participating in the Sudan Advisory Group meetings in Cairo, which will be launched on January 15, according to a UN announcement.

UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the meeting aims to strengthen coordination among international partners to support efforts to end the conflict in Sudan. He explained that Lamamra will hold meetings with regional and international stakeholders on the sidelines of the meetings to further push for a common approach to ending the fighting.

Regarding the humanitarian situation, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that the deteriorating security situation in the Kordofan states has led to the disruption of health services and the displacement of new populations. OCHA stated that three major hospitals in the city of Dilling were put out of service as a result of shelling, and that four doctors were killed in recent days.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that an attack on the Kartela market in the Six Mountains of South Kordofan State resulted in the deaths of five people and injuries to 13 others, all civilians. OCHA reiterated its call for an end to attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure and for unimpeded humanitarian access.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that more than 2,200 people were displaced last week from the Al-Abbasiya and Kadugli localities in South Kordofan towards White Nile State, while displacement continues from North Kordofan towards other states, including Gedaref, Khartoum, and River Nile.
