Al-Burhan: Welcomes Norwegian Envoy’s Statement
Head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, welcomed the statement by the Norwegian State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy to Sudan, Andreas Kravke, that no new US document has been presented to the Sudanese government.
He praised the efforts of US President Donald Trump and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia to achieve peace in Sudan.
This came during his meeting today at his office with the Norwegian State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy to Sudan, Andreas Kravke, in the presence of the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Muawiya Othman Khalid, who said in a press statement that Head of the Sovereignty Council welcomed Norway’s efforts as an active partner in peacemaking in Sudan for decades, emphasizing the Sudanese government’s commitment to achieving a just and sustainable peace that fulfills the aspirations of the Sudanese people and preserves their rights.
His Excellency reiterated his welcome of the US government’s continued efforts to achieve peace in Sudan, noting that Sudan understood the clarifications from the American side indicating that there was no new proposal from them regarding peace in Sudan at this time.
For his part, the Norwegian envoy affirmed his country’s commitment to working with partners for a unified and prosperous Sudan, explaining that he had emphasized during his meetings with Sudanese officials the necessity of engaging in a political process and responding to a humanitarian truce to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need.
He added, “We want to see the war stop so that the suffering of the Sudanese people ends.”
He further stated that he had noticed a heated exchange in the discussions due to the presence of two documents supposedly submitted by the United States, which he considered regrettable and unintentional. He said he had contacted the US President’s Advisor on Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, to clarify the matter.
He added that the only proposal regarding a humanitarian truce was the one submitted several weeks prior, adding that the truce would be followed by a comprehensive political process towards a unified and stable Sudan.
He emphasized that the truce agreement is not synonymous with a ceasefire agreement or a political agreement. He stated that the truce aims for a temporary cessation of hostilities, which would facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need. He stressed the necessity of allowing this aid to reach all parts of Sudan while keeping the Adré crossing open.
