Foreign Minister Welcomes US Counterpart’s Statements

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation welcomed the statements made yesterday (Wednesday) by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio following the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Canada, regarding the situation in Sudan.

Sudanese Foreign Minister, Mohi El-Din Salem, told the Sudan News Agency today (Thursday) that calling things by their names and directly accusing the terrorist militia and the mercenaries it employed of committing massacres against innocent civilians, and the possibility of designating it as a terrorist organization, paves the way for correcting the international community’s view of what is happening in Sudan. It also distances the country from equating a regular national army with an outlawed tribal militia.

Salem added that the US Secretary of State’s statements, acknowledging the brutality of the terrorist militia’s practices and the necessity of confronting it and halting its arms supplies, send a strong message to the other countries following the peace process in Sudan and those that aid the militia, either by supplying it with weapons or allowing it to use their territories and borders to smuggle weapons and mercenaries.

The Sudan News Agency (SUNA) quoted the minister as saying that the time has come to hold the Dagalo militia accountable, and that it is too late to stop the bloodshed of the Sudanese people. He pointed out that the international community’s delayed response to the Sudanese government’s repeated appeals to compel the militia to implement UN Security Council resolutions, such as Resolution 2736/2024, to allow aid into El Fasher, has led to the humanitarian catastrophe we are witnessing in El Fasher.

In the same vein, the minister called on the international community to recognize that the militia is employing the same tactics and besieging the cities of Dilling, Kadugli, and Babanusa, a situation the international community must address to prevent a repeat of the El Fasher tragedy.
