Idris heads Sudan’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York

Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris led Sudan’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which was attended by 193 heads of state and government.

The session was opened by Ms. Annalena Baerbock, President of the General Assembly, and Mr. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, delivered his opening remarks.

Also participating in the opening session were Mr. Lula da Silva, President of Brazil; US President Donald Trump; His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, Emir of the State of Qatar; and Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkey.

Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris will deliver Sudan’s speech on Thursday, September 25, 2025. The Sudanese delegation includes Foreign Minister Ambassador Muhieddin Salem; Minister of Culture, Information, and Tourism Mr. Khaled Al-Eiser; advisors to the Prime Minister Dr. Hussein Al-Hafyan and Mr. Nizar Abdullah; Ambassador Badr Al-Din Al-Jaafari; Sudan’s Ambassador to the United Nations Ambassador Al-Harith Idris; members of the mission; Sudan’s Ambassador to the United States Ambassador Mohamed Abdullah Idris; a number of ambassadors from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and members of the Sudanese Embassy in Washington.

The Prime Minister is expected to hold several meetings on the sidelines of the session with heads of state and government, the UN Secretary-General, and directors of UN, regional, and international organizations.

For his part, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed the need to combat impunity, considering it a major cause of conflicts that have erupted in many countries. Regarding Sudan, Guterres stressed the need to end the foreign support that fuels the war, praising the Sudanese people and describing them as deserving of a dignified life, security, and peace.

He also commended international diplomatic efforts to achieve peace in accordance with international law and expressed his concern over the disastrous situation in the Gaza Strip, calling for a halt to settlement expansion to achieve global peace based on international law.

Regarding Security Council reform, the Secretary-General emphasized the need for the Council to become more representative and effective in achieving peace and eliminating injustice.

He considered equality the best way to silence the guns, emphasizing that the United Nations continues to promote human dignity and human rights, which he described as universal and indivisible. He called for the preservation of freedom, freedom of expression, and refugee rights, and for combating racism and intolerance.

Regarding comprehensive development, Guterres called for constructive decisions to reshape global financial institutions to achieve fair global economies. He emphasized support for clean economy projects and harnessing technology and artificial intelligence as tools to serve humanity and advance human rights, noting that the General Assembly had formed an international committee on artificial intelligence with the aim of linking science with policy and promoting digital transformation without excluding any country.
