Dreams Drowned: A Lament for Lost Hope

Dr. Alsir Ali Saad Mohamed
In the heart of every family, stories are woven with threads of hope and dreams for a brighter future. Yet, today, our stories are tinged with shades of sorrow and grief. Once, the sun shone brightly on the aspirations of our youth—young souls who yearned for nothing more than a life of dignity, a future adorned with hope. Their eyes sparkled with a simple dream: to provide a better life for their families.
From the Libyan city of Tobruk, their dreams set sail on a fragile boat, carrying not only their bodies but also our wishes and our hearts. They embarked on a perilous journey, chasing a mirage called “hope in a distant land.” They believed this path was their gateway to a fairer world, where the dreams of the young would not fade into oblivion.
But the sea, that treacherous friend, showed no mercy. Off the Greek coast, their dreams sank with the boat. It was not just a vessel that was lost, but the hearts of mothers, the hopes of fathers, and the aspirations of sisters and brothers. All that remains are painful memories, indelible images, and echoes of voices that still ring in our ears.
We lost them—oh, how we wish they were still among us. Youth in the prime of their lives, they left behind a void nothing can fill. In every corner of our homes, we see their faces. In every smile, we recall their laughter. In every tear, we taste the bitterness of their absence. No comfort can heal our wounds, no words can ease our sorrow.
To the world, they became mere numbers in news reports, another set of victims in a long list of human tragedies. But to us, they were our entire world—our sons, our brothers, our friends. They were the future we awaited. Now, we are left with silence, regret, and prayers for patience to bear this profound loss.
To our beloved souls resting in the depths of the sea, we do not say goodbye, but rather, until we meet again in the gardens of eternity. You will live in our hearts forever.
