Sudan’s War .. The Repeated Quest for No-fly Zone

The call for a no-fly-zone in Darfur was raised in 2007, backed by the U.S. and Britain.

Responding to the proposal , a top European Union soldier said such is simply unworkable.

General Henri Bentegeat, the Frenchman who headed the EU’s top military body, said the size of the Sudanese region made such a plan unfeasible, among other reasons.

Madibo’s request is just a repetition of former prime minister Abdulla Hamdok last year when he called for enforcing a no-fly zone and having safe zones inside the country, even to the point to bring boots on the ground to protect the civilians.

The demand of Hamdok was rejected by the UNSG who stated that conditions _do not exist for such action._

Meanwhile, such a call being raised again by Dr. Waleed Madibo in a letter addressed to members of the international community, comes at a time when the whole world is witnessing the horrible atrocities committed by the RSF against civilians in various parts of Sudan.

Citing the recent incident in Tora in Northern Darfur , Madibo chose to ignore the fact that thousands of innocent women and children had and are being killed and displaced on a daily basis during indiscriminate attacks carried out by the RSF.

The international community should have condemned such atrocities long before.
