UNHRC to extend the mandate of the Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan

Member states of the United Nations Human Rights Council will begin consultations in Geneva today, Monday, on a draft resolution extending the mandate of the Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan for another year.

The draft resolution stipulates the Human Rights Council’s strong commitment to the sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Sudan.

The draft resolution indicates the mission’s findings that there are reasonable grounds to believe that both the armed forces and the Rapid Support Militia committed war crimes, and that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the Rapid Support Militia also committed crimes against humanity.

The draft resolution renews its call for an immediate and complete ceasefire by all parties, without preconditions, and the establishment of an independent ceasefire monitoring mechanism.

The draft resolution also called for a negotiated and peaceful solution to the conflict based on a comprehensive Sudanese-led dialogue, with the active participation of Sudanese civil actors, including women, leading to a transition to a civilian-led government.
