Sudan Re-elected to the Executive Council of the International Civil Defence Organisation in Geneva

During its 27th session held in Geneva on October 29, the General Assembly of the International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO) unanimously re-elected Sudan to the organization’s Executive Council for a new term extending until 2030, according to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA).

The organization focuses on strengthening the capabilities of civil defence agencies in disaster prevention and emergency response, a role of particular importance to Sudan in supporting its efforts to rehabilitate civil defence facilities and replace equipment destroyed by the war waged by militias against the state and its institutions.

The Sudanese delegation to the session was headed by Ambassador Hassan Hamid Hassan, Sudan’s Permanent Representative to Geneva, who, during the General Assembly proceedings, called for prioritizing Sudan in the organization’s strategy and future programs. He also emphasized the need to build the capacity of the National Civil Defense Council, support national efforts to provide firefighting and rescue equipment, and strengthen early warning systems and emergency response centers in the states.

The Sudanese representative commended the new leadership’s efforts in institutional reform, training development, and technical assistance, affirming Sudan’s support for these efforts and its hope that they would translate into a practical response to the needs of member states.

Through its membership on the Council, Sudan will continue to work with the organization and member states to expand technical cooperation, training, and the exchange of expertise. This will support the National Civil Defense Council’s efforts to protect citizens, restore services, and create conditions for safe return and recovery.
