Sudan Warns of Rising Refugee Crisis After Border Clashes with Ethiopia

KHARTOUM, Aug. 2 – Sudan’s Commission for Refugees has warned that escalating clashes between Tigray regional forces and the Ethiopian army along the Sudan-Ethiopia border could trigger a new wave of displacement and deepen the humanitarian crisis.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commission said fighting that erupted on Friday, July 31, caused projectiles to land inside several refugee camps in Sudan’s border area, resulting in deaths and injuries.

The Commission said the border zone serves as a key transit and reception point for asylum seekers fleeing Ethiopia, warning that continued military build-up could force more civilians to cross into Sudan while increasing security and humanitarian challenges.

It urged the international and regional communities, the United Nations, and humanitarian agencies to step up efforts to protect refugees, support peace and stability in the region, and provide urgent humanitarian assistance to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

The Commission said it is continuing to monitor developments in coordination with humanitarian partners and is working to ensure that refugees receive essential assistance and protection.
