WHO Affirms Support for Sudan’s Health System

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi El-Din Salem, met yesterday, Thursday, in Geneva, with the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in the presence of several of his senior aides.

During the meeting, the Minister reviewed the health and humanitarian situation in Sudan, highlighting the impact of the rebel militia’s crimes and its systematic targeting of hospitals and health facilities, and the severe damage inflicted on the country’s health system.

He also expressed the Sudanese government’s appreciation for the support provided by the World Health Organization, as a key partner in addressing these impacts.

The meeting addressed the urgent and priority needs to support ongoing national efforts to rehabilitate health facilities and enhance the health sector’s capacity to respond to the increasing needs with the rising waves of voluntary returnees.

For his part, the Director-General of the World Health Organization expressed his solidarity with Sudan and its people during this crisis, and his appreciation for the existing partnership with the Sudanese government. He affirmed the organization’s commitment to providing all possible support to the country’s health system, and stressed the importance of continued monitoring and coordination through the WHO country office in Sudan and its regional office in Cairo.
