Safety & Awareness Guide for Handling Flammable Refrigerants in Air Conditioners and Refrigerators (R32, R290 & R600a) Protecting Technicians, Homeowners, and the Environment

The refrigeration and air-conditioning industry is rapidly transitioning toward environmentally friendly refrigerants with low Global Warming Potential (GWP). Refrigerants such as R32, R290 (Propane), and R600a (Isobutane) are replacing traditional refrigerants because they offer excellent energy efficiency while significantly reducing environmental impact.
However, unlike conventional refrigerants such as R22, R407C, and R410A, these new refrigerants are flammable. Their safe use requires technicians, installers, service engineers, and end users to understand and strictly follow internationally recognized safety practices.
Although domestic refrigerators usually contain relatively small refrigerant charges, air-conditioning systems may contain several hundred grams or even more than one kilogram of refrigerant. Consequently, proper installation, servicing, leak prevention, and ventilation are essential to ensuring personal safety and protecting property.
Safety must always be regarded as the first priority.
PART ONE
Essential Safety Guidance for Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Technicians
1. Before Opening Any Refrigeration System
Before performing any maintenance work:
Disconnect electrical power completely.
Ensure the work area is well ventilated.
Eliminate all ignition sources, including smoking materials, open flames, welding equipment, grinders, and devices capable of producing sparks.
Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and protective gloves.
Whenever possible, use vacuum pumps, recovery units, and leak detectors approved for servicing flammable refrigerants.
2. Refrigerant Recovery and Safe Purging
Never apply heat to any refrigeration circuit that may still contain refrigerant.
The recommended procedure is:
Recover the refrigerant using approved recovery equipment whenever recovery is required.
Purge the system using dry Oxygen-Free Nitrogen (OFN).
Safely vent the nitrogen in a well-ventilated outdoor location.
Repeat the nitrogen purging process until all traces of flammable refrigerant have been removed.
Only after the system has been safely purged should brazing or soldering be carried out.
Never use oxygen or compressed air for pressure testing or purging refrigeration systems, as this may create an explosive mixture.
3. Special Safety Precautions for Domestic Refrigerators (R600a)
R600a (Isobutane) is heavier than air and may accumulate near floor level in confined spaces.
Never puncture refrigerant tubing.
Never use knives, screwdrivers, or sharp tools to remove ice from the evaporator.
Use electronic leak detectors specifically designed for hydrocarbon refrigerants.
Avoid cross-contamination by using clean service equipment.
4. Special Safety Precautions for Air Conditioners (R32 & R290)
Because these systems often contain larger refrigerant charges, additional precautions are necessary.
Pressure-test piping using dry nitrogen before opening service valves.
Tighten all flare connections according to the manufacturer’s specified torque.
Keep an appropriate CO₂ or dry chemical (ABC) fire extinguisher within easy reach.
Never braze any pipework until the refrigerant has been completely removed and the system has been purged with nitrogen.

Ensure adequate ventilation, especially when working indoors or in confined spaces.
PART TWO
Safety Advice for Homeowners and Building Occupants
What Should You Do If You Suspect a Refrigerant Leak?
If you hear a hissing sound or suspect refrigerant leakage:
Immediately open doors and windows to improve ventilation.
Do not operate electrical switches if a flammable atmosphere may be present.
Do not smoke or use matches, candles, or any open flame.
Leave the area if the leak appears significant.
Contact a qualified refrigeration technician immediately.
Do not rely on smell to detect refrigerant leaks. Many refrigerants are naturally odorless.
Refrigerator Safety
Maintain at least 100 mm (4 inches) clearance behind the refrigerator for proper ventilation.
Never attempt to repair the sealed refrigeration system yourself.
Avoid laying the refrigerator flat during transportation unless recommended by the manufacturer.
Keep ventilation openings clean and unobstructed.
Air Conditioner Safety
Ensure installation and servicing are carried out only by trained personnel experienced in handling flammable refrigerants.
If cooling performance deteriorates, unusual noises develop, or excessive heating is observed, switch off the system and arrange professional inspection.
Clean air filters regularly to maintain efficient airflow and reduce compressor operating temperatures.
Additional Safety Recommendations
Never mix different refrigerants.
Always charge refrigerant by weight using a calibrated electronic scale.
Clearly label systems containing flammable refrigerants.
Store refrigerant cylinders upright in cool, well-ventilated locations away from direct sunlight.
Ensure technicians receive regular training on the safe handling of A2L and A3 refrigerants.
Conclusion
The refrigeration industry is entering a new generation of environmentally responsible refrigerants that contribute significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy efficiency.
These environmental benefits, however, come with increased responsibility.
Technicians must follow internationally accepted safety procedures during every installation and service operation. Homeowners should avoid attempting repairs themselves and should always seek qualified assistance whenever a refrigerant leak or equipment malfunction is suspected.
Safe refrigeration practice protects lives, preserves property, and supports a more sustainable future.
