IFRC Special Envoy Calls for Greater International Support to Address Sudan’s Humanitarian Crisis

The Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) – Khartoum State Branch hosted a high-level meeting on Saturday to mark the visit of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Special Envoy , Derk Segaar, to the Sudanese capital. The visit comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the Sudanese Red Crescent Society and the IFRC.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary General of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, Ahmed Al-Tayeb Suleiman; the Head of the IFRC Delegation in Sudan, Thierry Bolois; the Assistant Secretary General of the SRCS, Najat Farah Khairi; the Director of the SRCS Khartoum State Branch, Dr. Mohamed Abdallah Ali; as well as several officials from the Khartoum branch.
Discussions focused on enhancing the partnership between the Sudanese Red Crescent Society and the IFRC, reviewing humanitarian priorities in Khartoum State, and supporting the Society’s efforts to deliver humanitarian services and respond to the needs of people affected by the war.
The meeting also explored ways to strengthen humanitarian action during the coming period.
During the meeting, Dr. Mohamed Abdallah Ali welcomed the IFRC Special Envoy and presented a comprehensive overview of the Khartoum branch’s achievements over the past period.
He highlighted the Society’s work in emergency relief, health services, water and sanitation, environmental health, and support for war-affected communities, in addition to its contributions to early recovery initiatives and volunteer capacity-building.
He also outlined the scale of the humanitarian response carried out by the branch despite the significant challenges imposed by the conflict, reaffirming the Society’s commitment to fulfilling its humanitarian mission in partnership with the IFRC and other members of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to reach those most in need.
For his part, IFRC Special Envoy Dirk Segaar expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to visit Khartoum and praised the efforts of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society under the current circumstances.
He said he was shocked by the extent of the destruction and humanitarian suffering caused by the war in Sudan, expressing regret that the Sudanese crisis has not received the level of attention it deserves from the international community, despite the growing humanitarian needs and the increasing number of people affected by the conflict.
Segaar reaffirmed that the IFRC will continue supporting the Sudanese Red Crescent Society and strengthening its humanitarian response capacity. He explained that the purpose of his visit is to assess the situation on the ground and explore ways to expand cooperation and partnership to help alleviate the suffering of people affected by the war.
