Sudan Health Ministry Holds Emergency Coordination Meeting on Cholera in West Kordofan and Ebola Preparedness

The Federal Ministry of Health in Khartoum hosted an emergency coordination meeting with partners to discuss the cholera outbreak situation in West Kordofan State and review preparedness and response plans for the Ebola virus disease threat recently reported in some African countries.

The meeting, chaired by the Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, was attended in person and virtually by representatives of international organizations, health partners, and senior ministry officials.
Participants reviewed the cholera situation in West Kordofan, where cumulative cases had reached 308 as of May 27, including 77 deaths. A total of 99 patients have recovered, while 32 cases remain under treatment in stable condition.

The meeting also examined ongoing response interventions and field challenges, particularly difficulties in accessing affected areas and delivering medicines and medical supplies.
In addition, the meeting reviewed Sudan’s Ebola preparedness and response plan, including measures to strengthen health screening and surveillance at border crossings and points of entry. Discussions also focused on identifying urgent medical supply needs and enhancing coordination between the Ministry of Health, international organizations, and development partners.

Dr. Ibrahim directed health authorities to accurately assess the requirements needed to combat cholera in West Kordofan, establish effective mechanisms for delivering medicines and essential supplies, and intensify preventive efforts in border states to curb the spread of disease. He also emphasized the importance of sustaining preparedness efforts against Ebola to protect the country from the significant risks posed by the disease.

The Minister commended the support provided by health partners and humanitarian organizations, calling for increased assistance to help Sudan effectively respond to current and potential disease outbreaks. He also expressed his appreciation for their participation in the emergency meeting.
Representatives of the participating organizations, both in person and virtually, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Federal Ministry of Health in combating epidemics, including cholera and Ebola.
