Head of Sudanese Commission of Inquiry into War Crimes Briefs Human Rights Council President on Commission’s Key Activities

Sudan’s Attorney General, Intisar Ahmed Abdel Aal, in her capacity as head of the “National Commission of Inquiry into Crimes and Violations of National Law and International Humanitarian Law” during the war, briefed the President of the Human Rights Council, Siddaharto Suryo Diburo, and his senior staff in Geneva today (Tuesday). She presented the key findings of the Commission’s fifth progress report on its work, including investigations and legal proceedings.

The Commission’s head affirmed that the national judiciary is qualified, willing, and capable of achieving justice, providing redress for victims, and preventing impunity, in accordance with the principles of complete independence and integrity. She also called for the principle of complementarity to be upheld by supporting and bolstering ongoing national efforts to investigate the crimes committed.

For his part, the President of the Human Rights Council affirmed his follow-up on the work of the National Commission through its reports and statements to the Human Rights Council, noting in this context the existing cooperation between the Government of Sudan and the Country Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as its cooperation with the appointed expert. He also touched on the atrocities, violations and deplorable humanitarian conditions, expressing his hope that Sudan would regain its security and stability.
