Federal Health Ministry Launches Training on Safe Healthcare Waste Management

As part of efforts to promote a safe and healthy environment, the Federal Ministry of Health today inaugurated a training course for Environmental Sanitation Department Officers from the states. The course, held at the Environmental Health Hall of the Ministry, will run from June 7 to 9, 2026. The opening ceremony was attended by the Undersecretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Ali Babiker Sayed Ahmed, and the Director General of Primary Health Care, Dr. Musab Siddig Al-Haj.

The training aims to enhance participants’ knowledge and awareness of the proper management of healthcare waste. The program covers key topics including the definition of healthcare waste, international classification standards, sources of waste, and the groups most vulnerable to associated risks. The course comes as part of the Ministry’s efforts to strengthen the capacities of environmental sanitation officers in addressing this critical public health issue.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Ali Babiker Sayed Ahmed emphasized the importance of the training workshop, noting that healthcare waste poses a significant threat to human health and the environment if not properly managed and disposed of. He added that the Ministry continues to face challenges in this area, as there are currently only two medical waste incinerators operating in the Northern and Al-Qadarif states, highlighting the need for greater efforts to expand waste treatment and disposal facilities.

The Undersecretary further stressed the importance of community participation in managing healthcare waste, explaining that public engagement is a key pillar in ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all.
