Al-Burhan Discusses “Quintet” Efforts to Achieve Peace with UN Envoy

Head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met on Sunday with the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto. The meeting addressed ongoing efforts to achieve peace in Sudan.

Haavisto explained in a press statement that this was his second visit since assuming his post in March 2026. He noted that he had held extensive consultations in the region with heads of state and government, as well as a wide range of Sudanese political actors and representatives of civil society. These consultations focused on the aspirations of the Sudanese people for the future of their country, encouraging de-escalation efforts to build trust, and discussing practical steps to create a conducive environment for peace.

The Special Envoy briefed Head of the Sovereignty Council on the efforts of the five-party mechanism comprising the African Union, IGAD, the League of Arab States, the United Nations, and the European Union. He reviewed the progress made in the consultations organized by the mechanism, which recently concluded in Addis Ababa, to bring together Sudanese partners and discuss the most effective ways to initiate a comprehensive dialogue.

Haavisto emphasized that the political process belongs to the Sudanese people, requesting Head of the Sovereignty Council to support these efforts. He also reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to continuing its support for Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty, and its commitment to engaging with all Sudanese partners to advance the security and political tracks, resolve differences, and reach a consensus that helps build a shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous Sudan. He pledged to do everything possible, through his periodic meetings in Khartoum and the region, to support ongoing efforts to reach a sustainable solution to the conflict in Sudan.
