Advisor to Head of the Sovereignty Council Concludes Important Visit to Spain

Dr. Amjad Farid Al-Tayeb, Advisor to Head of the Sovereignty Council, concluded an official visit to the Kingdom of Spain today (Thursday). The visit included an official meeting with the Spanish side and several other meetings and activities.

The Sudanese delegation was headed by the Advisor and included Ambassador Ahmed Youssef Mohamed, Chargé d’Affaires, and members of the mission. The Spanish delegation was headed by Mr. Diego Martinez, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Director of the African Department at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Security, and the Spanish Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa.

The two sides discussed bilateral relations between Sudan and Spain and ways to develop them, particularly in the economic and humanitarian aid sectors. They also discussed developments in Sudan and their impact on the region, as well as the importance of achieving peace and stability in Sudan and its connection to regional security in the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes region, the Sahel, and the Red Sea. The discussions also addressed the positive role that the Kingdom of Spain can play in achieving these goals, based on its firm commitment to the principles of international law and international humanitarian law.

Advisor Amjad Farid commended the Kingdom of Spain’s supportive stance towards Sudan, emphasizing Sudan’s desire to strengthen and develop relations between the two friendly countries in various fields. It was agreed to activate the framework agreement signed between the two countries in 2010 and to resume holding regular meetings of the political consultation committee between the two countries, following the completion of the necessary arrangements.

Advisor Amjad Farid also met with Her Majesty’s Advisor for Diplomatic Affairs, conveying the greetings of His Excellency Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, to His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain. He also expressed gratitude to Her Majesty Queen Letizia for her interest in meeting with the Sudanese community and highlighting the situation in Sudan.

He also met with the Advisor to the Spanish Prime Minister for Diplomatic Affairs and, during the meeting, conveyed an oral message from His Excellency Professor Kamil Idris, Prime Minister of the Transitional Government, to His Excellency Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain. The two messages expressed gratitude to Spain for its supportive stance towards Sudan and conveyed Sudan’s desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries in all fields.

Separately, the advisor to Head of the Sovereignty Council met with the Director of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and representatives of Spanish organizations working in the humanitarian sector in the country. He commended their role in providing humanitarian aid to those affected by the war in Sudan and reiterated the Sudanese government’s commitment to removing obstacles to facilitate their humanitarian work in the country.

As part of efforts to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries, the advisor met with Spanish business associations and companies, highlighting investment and reconstruction opportunities in Sudan, particularly in the energy, infrastructure, and mining sectors. It was agreed to extend an invitation to the Spanish business community to visit Sudan in the near future to explore opportunities for participation in reconstruction efforts.

The advisor also held an informational meeting with prominent members of the Sudanese community in Madrid, reviewing the latest developments in the country and listening to their inquiries and questions. He praised the community members’ positive stance and their support for their homeland and its territorial integrity. At the end of the visit, he gave a media briefing at the mission headquarters with a group of representatives of Spanish newspapers and media outlets, reviewing the results of the visit and answering media questions about the current situation in Sudan.
