Minister of Higher Education Affirms the Importance of Scientific Research in the Post-War Phase
Today, Thursday, April 23, 2026, the capital, Khartoum, witnessed the launch of a training workshop organized by the Arab Councils of Scientific Research Union in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The workshop is held under the title: “Capacity Building and Knowledge Transfer Program for Sudanese Higher Education and Scientific Research Institutions,” marking the first comprehensive scientific gathering in the capital following its liberation.
The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Professor Ahmed Mudawi Musa, stated during his address at the opening session—hosted by the International University of Africa—that the workshop represents an important step toward restoring the developmental role of scientific research and rebuilding research institutions affected by the war.
He added that such cooperation contributes to reactivating research institutions and restoring Sudan’s scientific role.
He emphasized the ministry’s commitment to ensuring the continued operation of national research centers, noting that scientific research is a fundamental pillar of the university mission.
The minister revealed that there are 10 national research centers, 36 public universities, and 129 private universities and colleges, with a total enrollment exceeding 1.5 million students. He pointed out that a large number of these institutions were affected by the war, particularly in Khartoum, Al-Jazirah, Kordofan, and Darfur states, calling for strengthened partnerships to rebuild the higher education system in the post-war phase.
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Arab Councils of Scientific Research Union, Professor Abdelmajid Benamara, expressed his delight at the return of scientific activities to Khartoum. He noted that Sudan had previously played a significant role in supporting the Union by hosting it and providing operational needs, which contributed to its continuity.
He also confirmed that Sudan is hosting the first in-person event under this initiative and expressed hope for the continuation of programs supporting Sudanese universities in the coming period.
Meanwhile, the Director of the International University of Africa, Professor Hatim Osman, stated that hosting the workshop aligns with the university’s role in supporting science and knowledge. He added that the program contributes to enhancing capacities, restoring the leadership of higher education institutions, and supporting development and reconstruction efforts.
