Sudanese Foreign Ministry: Militia’s Targeting of Cities Constitutes “War Crimes” and a Dangerous Escalation Requiring International Accountability
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation strongly condemned the Rapid Support Forces militia’s continued attacks on civilian targets and vital infrastructure in Sudan using drones.
In a statement issued Tuesday evening, the Ministry noted the targeting of the cities of El Obeid, Kosti, and Dilling, describing it as a dangerous escalation that embodies a recurring pattern of crimes targeting civilians.
The Ministry affirmed that these attacks represent a grave and blatant violation of international humanitarian law and all international norms and conventions that prohibit targeting civilians and civilian facilities. They also constitute fully-fledged war crimes that necessitate accountability and prosecution under international law.
The Ministry stressed that these attacks are not isolated incidents, but rather part of a deliberate criminal approach through which the militia seeks to undermine the stability of the state, terrorize the population, and target vital facilities and basic services. The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the international community, particularly the United Nations, the Security Council, and regional organizations, to take a clear and firm stance condemning these crimes unequivocally and to act without delay to implement effective measures to stop the attacks and ensure that the perpetrators, as well as those who support or finance them, are held accountable.
The Ministry warned that continued international silence and inaction encourage further violations and undermine the entire system of international law.
According to the statement, the Sudanese government reiterates its full commitment to protecting civilians, preserving the sovereignty of the state, and maintaining the security and stability of the country. It emphasized that protecting citizens and respecting international humanitarian law is a legal and moral obligation that cannot be compromised or neglected.
