Minnawi Discusses Sudan’s Humanitarian and Political Issues with the UN Envoy

In his office in Port Sudan, Darfur Governor and leader of the Sudan Liberation Army Movement, Commander Minni Arko Minnawi, met yesterday with Pekka Haavisto, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Sudan, accompanied by Ms. Nayla Hajjar, Political Affairs Officer and Special Assistant to the Envoy.

The meeting addressed a number of important issues, primarily the humanitarian and political situation in the country. The UN delegation expressed its deep concern regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan in general, and in Darfur in particular, stressing the importance of ensuring the continued flow of humanitarian aid to those affected.

The meeting also addressed the political track of the Sudanese crisis, with both sides emphasizing the need to launch a comprehensive dialogue aimed at achieving a humanitarian truce.

For his part, Minnawi stressed that any political initiative must be based on a clear vision built on four fundamental pillars: preserving the unity of Sudan, its people and territory, the unity of the Sudanese government and its armed forces, and the exclusion of the United Arab Emirates from any role in any future political dialogue. At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties agreed on the importance of continuing coordination and joint work with international partners to facilitate dialogue between the various components of the Sudanese people, in order to contribute to ending the current crisis.
