Jibril Discusses Building Trust for Peace with Haavisto
As part of his meetings with Sudanese officials, Pekka Haavisto, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, met with Finance Minister and head of the Justice and Equality Movement, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, in the presence of Ms. Naila Hajjar, Political Affairs Officer and Special Assistant to the Envoy.
The meeting addressed the humanitarian, economic, and political situation in the country. The Minister emphasized his rejection of ready-made solutions offered by the international community, stressing that bringing together all stakeholders is a crucial step towards building a clear vision and establishing a suitable starting point for the peace process.
According to the Sudan News Agency, the two sides also discussed ways to strengthen peace efforts, affirming that achieving sustainable peace requires building trust between the parties through prisoner exchanges, opening humanitarian corridors, and agreeing on a short-term truce to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The meeting also touched upon the importance of protecting civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, water and electricity facilities, and preventing their use for military purposes, in order to minimize civilian casualties.
In this context, both sides affirmed that reconstruction is a fundamental element of the peace process, as stability cannot be established without the restoration of public services, which, according to the agency, strengthens citizens’ confidence in the viability of peace.
The two sides also stressed the need to restructure the relationship between military and political action to ensure the integration of armed forces into state institutions based on clear legal foundations, and to prevent the existence of any parallel forces outside the framework of the state.
The meeting concluded that achieving peace in Sudan requires a cumulative approach based on practical and implementable steps that gradually evolve into a comprehensive and sustainable political process.
