Recently, Mr. Zaki Hanna , one of Sudanese expatriate intellectuals interested in Urban Affairs contacted me via WhatsApp and Facebook expressing his desire to share us an assessment or an anaylysis of his latest creative work: Gadrouf Sa’ad: A City in the Heart” ,and on his behalf, I’m delighted to publish its details in this column today.
About his book;
The “Qadrouf Saad: A City in the Heart” by Zaki Hanna Tsefai represents a narrative work that reviews the history and development of the city of Gedaref as a case study in an urbanization and community life. . In this work, Tsefai relies on an analytical monitoring of place and depicting as a vital, evolving entity that embodies human interactions with their respective environment and collective memory.
📖 Context and Methodology:
The book afopts social historical and an analytical approach which includes a chromological account of the city development and social anaylsis of its human fabric and how its ueban identity was formed with an elaapse of times. . The work surpasses being a documentary recording to being an attempt to understand “, Soul of the Place” . Zaki depends on historical sources, interviews on the field and private observations to draw and paint an integrated image of the town of Gedaref.

·1- Documenting Local Memory: The book fills a gap in the documentation of medium and small cities, which are often neglected in historical and social writings in favor of capitals and major cities.
·2- Holistic View: The work succeeds in presenting an integrated vision lbinding history, urbanism, and society, making it a reference for understanding how cities are formed in the collective consciousness.
·3- Humanistic Approach: The book is distinguished by its humanistic tone in addressing the city, presenting it not merely as concrete blocks, but as a living entity pulsating with relationships, memories, and history.
✒️ From a critical perspective, it can be noted that the sometimes impressionistic nature and reliance of author on personal narrative might reduce the objectivity of some analyses. Additionally, the absence of precise statistics and detailed timelines may limit its effectiveness as a strict academic reference for some researchers.

About the Author
Zaki Hanna Tsafai. was born in the bustling East Sudanese City of Qedaref at Diaim Al-Nur.
He. Completed his elementary and intermediate education at Al-Ittihad Primary School in Al-Qadaref , and High secondary school at the Evangelical Commercial School in Omdurman. . As For university, he attended the Institute of Technological Colleges – now , the Sudan University of Technology. College of Business Studies. He holds a Master degree in Commerce from Madurai Kamaraj University in India. He is a former football player for Al-Islah Club and the Qadaref regional team. So far, he has two books: 1- Gadrouf Saad: A City in the Heart – Part One (and has completed the draft for Part Two). 2- The Hanna Tsafai Library – Al-Qadaref (1930-1963).
