UN Security Council Statement on Sudan

The UN Security Council declared its full support for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Sudan, reiterating its firm rejection of the establishment of a parallel governing authority in areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In a statement issued by its members on Wednesday, the Council called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Sudan, condemning the RSF’s attacks against civilians.

The Council expressed its concern regarding the ongoing violence in Sudan, including in the Kordofan and Darfur regions, urging all parties to “end the fighting immediately.”

It also condemned “the repeated drone attacks against civilians, civilian infrastructure, and humanitarian workers, including attacks targeting the World Food Programme,” emphasizing that “deliberate attacks against humanitarian workers and their escorts may constitute war crimes.”

The Council members also called on all parties, in accordance with their obligations under international law, to “protect and respect humanitarian workers.”

The Council expressed its grave concern about “the famine and food insecurity conditions in some areas of Sudan resulting from the clashes and the risk of their expansion,” stressing that “starvation should never be used as a weapon of war.”
