Sudan Urges Security Council to Take Practical Measures to Stop UAE from Supplying Rebel Militia with Military Equipment
Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Al-Harith Idris, called on the UN Security Council to take practical measures to stop the flow of arms shipments reaching the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia from the United Arab Emirates, considering them “the sole reason for the continuation of the conflict.”
Ambassador Al-Harith told the Security Council session held on Thursday that these continuous shipments of Emirati weapons have affected the course and balance of the war by prolonging and expanding its scope, and have exacerbated the scale of crimes and atrocities committed by the RSF militia, which has made the killing of civilians using drones and missiles its modus operandi.
The Sudanese representative added that there is further evidence regarding the provision of military and logistical support to the militia from the UAE, overland through neighboring countries, and by air using five secret airstrips in Nyala, in addition to temporary dirt airstrips.
The Sudanese representative to the United Nations reiterated his government’s commitment to protecting civilians. He stated that the terrorist attacks perpetrated by militias against civilians necessitate the Security Council’s support for the Sudanese government in confronting the aggression. He noted that the Sudanese government is planning a comprehensive political process following the cessation of hostilities and that militias have no role in Sudan’s future. He emphasized that there will be no impunity for those who violate the law and shed blood.
Ambassador Al-Harith Idris Al-Harith commended the Saudi, American, and Egyptian efforts to end the war in Sudan. He indicated that Sudan’s channels are open for positive engagement with these efforts and expressed Sudan’s hope that the United States will use its influence to stop the war. He considered the American position on the Sudanese conflict to be significantly more advanced compared to the positions of other mediators and to carry a degree of seriousness following President Trump’s pledges after his meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to end the war. He affirmed that Sudan supports the Saudi-American-Egyptian alliance, which supports ending the war, following President Trump’s clear commitment to halting the war and aggression.
The Permanent Representative explained that the Sudanese government is now returning to Khartoum and engaging positively with the African Union, the United Nations, and regional organizations. It is also resuming its activities within IGAD and engaging with the international community and the United States. He emphasized the commitment of the civilian-led government to launching a comprehensive national dialogue. The government had previously presented its vision for ending the war to the Security Council. He noted the continued efforts of the civilian-led government to achieve peace through national ownership and to ensure the success of the transition process, culminating in elections and enabling the people to exercise their democratic right to choose.
The Permanent Representative further stated that the Sudanese government is now returning to Khartoum and engaging positively with the African Union, the United Nations, and regional organizations. It is also resuming its activities within the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and engaging with the international community and the United States.
