Minister of Education meets UNICEF Country Director

The Minister of Education and National Education, Dr. Al-Tohamy Al-Zein Hajar, confirmed that the education sector is one of the sectors most affected by the war launched by the rebel Rapid Support Militia against the state, pointing to the urgent need to maintain the schools destroyed by the militia and to prepare the school environment for students.

This came during his meeting at his office in Omdurman today with the UNICEF Country Director, Mr. Yate Shelton, in the presence of the Undersecretary of the Ministry, Dr. Ahmed Khalifa Omar, and the UNICEF Education Officer, Mr. Daniel Behita. The meeting reviewed UNICEF’s plan for the year 2026 to support education in Sudan and its projects in the fields of girls’ education, nomadic education, and curriculum modernization.

The Minister briefed the organization on the challenges facing education and the Ministry’s vision and priorities represented in improving the quality of education, creating the school environment, maintaining schools, training teachers, and printing textbooks.

For his part, Shelton stressed the importance of the partnership between the Ministry and UNICEF, pointing out that he looks forward to developing it through good coordination and providing the necessary statistics on which the implementation of educational projects is based. He emphasized the organization’s readiness to contribute to supporting education projects according to the priorities set by the Ministry.
