Agar Affirms Government’s Commitment to Supporting and Facilitating the Activities of International Health Organizations

Deputy Head of the Sovereignty Council, Malik Agar, affirmed the Sudanese government’s commitment to supporting international health organizations operating in the country, as well as global and regional programs working in partnership and coordination with the Sudanese government.

During his meeting today at his office with a delegation from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI), headed by Dr. Sanya Nishtar, the Alliance’s Executive Director, and in the presence of the Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, he pledged to overcome all obstacles hindering access to vaccinations for children in all Sudanese states.

In a press statement, the Minister of Health explained that the GAVI program has been the primary funder of childhood immunizations in Sudan for many years, noting the significant increase in vaccination rates during the war, from less than 40% to 80%, which he described as a major achievement.

His Excellency indicated that the visit of the Gavi delegation to Sudan aimed to support the immunization program in Sudan and reaffirm the commitment to continuing support for vaccination programs.

The Minister of Health noted the introduction of new vaccines for the first time in Sudan, such as those for malaria and hepatitis B, and that the Gavi has supported Sudan with more than one billion dollars during its twenty years of operation in the country.
