EU to “turn a new page” in bilateral relations with Sudan

The European Union announced a new strategic direction, expressing its desire to “turn a new page” in bilateral relations with Sudan.

Lieutenant General Al-Sadiq Ismail Mahmoud, Advisor to the Sovereignty Council for Organizations and Humanitarian Action, received a high-level delegation from the European Union mission, headed by Yassin Hisham Nadkan, Deputy Head of Mission, as part of efforts to restore communication and rapprochement between the two sides.

The European delegation included Ayoub Labisi, Advisor to the EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, and Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the mission’s Political Affairs Officer.

The delegation emphasized that the main objective of the visit was to restore communication and open channels with the Sudanese government, noting that this step comes in preparation for an upcoming visit by the Special Representative, Elbit Wood, to discuss the peace process in Sudan in the near future.

The visiting delegation revealed a new strategic direction for the European Union. This reflects a desire to “turn a new page” in bilateral relations.

The Chargé d’Affaires expressed the European Union’s commitment to re-establishing its position as a key player in efforts to resolve the Sudanese crisis and to restoring rapprochement with the Sudanese government.

The delegation indicated the possibility of reopening the EU mission in Port Sudan or Khartoum in the near future, a move that reflects the EU’s seriousness in strengthening its diplomatic and political presence in the country.

For his part, Lieutenant General Al-Sadiq Ismail Mahmoud welcomed the visiting delegation, emphasizing the importance of resuming constructive relations.

The advisor to the Sovereign Council pledged that Sudanese state institutions would work towards achieving this shared goal, serving the interests of the Sudanese people and supporting peace and stability efforts in the region.
