Energy Minister: Sudan Sets Strategic Goal to Localize Clean Energy Sector

Sudan’s Energy Minister, Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim Ahmed, confirmed that his country has set a strategic goal to localize the clean energy sector.

This came during his participation on the second day of “India Energy Week 2026,” in a high-level dialogue session entitled “Global South Solidarity in Clean Energy: Strengthening South-South Cooperation for a Shared Future.” During the session, which also included Ralph Regnvanu, Vanuatu’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment, the minister highlighted the importance of harnessing local potential in solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, and biomass energy, in a manner that aligns with regional characteristics. The minister stated, “Sudan will increasingly rely on hydropower instead of fossil fuels, and we must expand our use of renewable and clean energy sources.” He explained that solar energy is the most suitable for Sudan’s climatic and economic conditions, adding, “We are working to promote and develop the use of solar energy. The slogan ‘One Sun, One Energy’ is the most applicable to Sudan. We are an agricultural country, and renewable energy represents the primary source of support for the agricultural sector.” In support of this transition, the minister noted the Central Bank of Sudan’s commitment to allocating 12.5% ​​of microfinance to the clean energy sector in agriculture. The industry, which will bolster efforts to transition towards a green and sustainable economy.

The session saw a distinguished attendance of several ministers, diplomats, and executives from major Indian energy companies, where participants discussed the growing role of renewable energy sources in enhancing energy security and building resilience to climate change in developing countries.
