Widespread Power Outage, Gradual Restoration Expected

The Sudan Electricity Company said today (Monday) that the power outage was caused by a sudden technical malfunction.

A statement issued by the company’s media department confirmed that Sudan’s states are experiencing power outages due to a sudden technical fault that halted the supply. The company affirmed that engineers and maintenance teams are working to repair the faults, restart the generating units, and gradually restore service. Social media circulated news of a general shutdown at the Meroe Dam causing the power outage.

The electricity sector in Sudan is facing significant challenges due to the frequent targeting of power generation and distribution stations by the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia. The actual electricity demand in Sudan is estimated at more than 3,500 megawatts, while available production does not exceed 1,200-1,500 megawatts.
