Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation announced the completion of the handover of all assets belonging to the Gezira Scheme to the newly established Irrigation Unit, which was created by a recent decision of the Prime Minister.

A statement issued by the Ministry’s media office yesterday (Wednesday) said that, based on the Cabinet’s decision to establish the Irrigation Department of the Gezira Scheme, “all irrigation assets of the project have been handed over to the Gezira Scheme administration, which will directly assume all operations and tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the Sennar Dam. All employees of the Irrigation Department have been transferred to the new administration, and all components of the project’s network, including all barrages and pumping stations, have been received.”

The statement added that technical committees were formed to inventory the work and prepare the necessary reports to complete the handover procedures between the Irrigation Sector and Gezira and Managil Schemes. This process was completed with the signing of the handover memorandum on Monday, November 17, 2025. A list of vehicles and equipment transferred to the Irrigation Sector since 2016 was also handed over, specifying their locations and current condition. It was noted that some vehicles were lost due to recent events, and a list detailing their locations and condition was prepared.

According to an official statement the Irrigation Sector expressed its readiness for full cooperation with the new administration, starting November 5, and began fully meeting the project’s water demands from the Sennar Dam. This cooperation extends to utilizing personnel who have not yet been officially assigned. A mobile crane was also borrowed to perform certain tasks as requested. It was decided to retain 22 vehicles at the project site to support Gezira Scheme until the end of the winter season, reflecting the Irrigation Sector’s commitment to ensuring a successful season.

The general managers of the irrigation sector also conducted field visits to the heads of departments in Al-Manaqil and North Gezira, to follow up on the progress of performance and to confirm support for the Gezira Scheme to make the season a success, and they confirmed their readiness to provide technical support at any time or in the event of any challenges.
