Sudan Calls for Climate Justice at COP30 Summit in Brazil

The Sudanese Ambassador to Brazil, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tijani Swar, delivered Sudan’s statement at the COP30 Climate Summit held in Rio de Janeiro from November 6-7, expressing Sudan’s appreciation to the government and people of Brazil for hosting the summit.

He emphasized that Sudan faces significant environmental challenges due to climate change and the destruction caused by rebel militias, which has led to water and air pollution and increased drought and flooding.

The Ambassador noted that Sudan is committed to implementing the Paris Agreement and its national strategies in the agriculture, energy, and water sectors, stressing the need to achieve climate justice and activate the Loss and Damage Fund. He called on developed countries to fulfill their financial commitments and transfer technology to support developing countries.

The ambassador explained that the military operations carried out by the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia have resulted in widespread destruction of Nile forests, oil storage facilities, and industrial installations, leading to the release of large quantities of pollutants into the air and water, and exacerbating desertification and the degradation of agricultural land.

He also called on Sudan to establish investment partnerships in renewable energy, forest management, sustainable agriculture, and the management of vital water and minerals, with the aim of building an inclusive and equitable green economy.
