Life Imprisonment for Kushayb

The prosecution at the International Criminal Court asked the judges to sentence Ali Kushayb to life imprisonment, after convicting him on 27 counts related to war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Darfur region.

The prosecution explained that only a life sentence reflects the magnitude of the crimes committed, which included:

– The killing of at least 213 civilians

– The rape of women and girls

– The torture and cruel treatment of 200 detainees

– The burning of villages, markets, and homes

– The displacement of 3,400 families from Darfur

– Ethnic and political targeting of the Fur and other non-Arabs

The prosecution emphasized that these violations constitute grave crimes warranting the maximum penalties, stressing that international justice is obligated to provide redress for the victims and ensure that the perpetrators do not escape punishment.
