Is Exam Period Really the Best Time of the Semester?

By: Dr. Rifaat Mohamed Osman

Every semester, as we approach the final weeks, a familiar energy fills university corridors. Some call it stress, others call it pressure, but I have come to believe that exam period is, in many ways, the best time of the academic cycle. This may sound surprising, especially to students who are buried under notes and caffeine, but allow me to explain why.

Exams create a unique moment of focus. Throughout the semester, students juggle classes, assignments, clubs, part-time jobs, and the endless distractions of modern life. But during exams, priorities sharpen. Students become more intentional with their time. Study groups flourish, libraries become full, and even the quietest learners find a rhythm. It is a rare period when academic purpose becomes clear and collective.

Exam season is also a powerful teacher of life skills. Beyond assessing knowledge, exams nurture discipline, time management, resilience, and strategic thinking. These are not just academic tools; they are life tools. Many students later admit that the habits they built during exam weeks stayed with them long after graduation.

There is another dimension we often overlook: community. Students bond during exam time more than at any other point in the semester. They motivate each other, share resources, explain difficult concepts, and sometimes simply sit together in silent solidarity. That sense of shared struggle creates memories, friendships, and confidence. Even faculty, often seen as distant, become more accessible, offering consultations, guidance, and encouragement.

Of course, exam period comes with stress, but not all stress is harmful. The right amount pushes us to perform, strengthens our sense of achievement, and helps us discover what we are capable of. Growth seldom happens in comfort.

When the final paper is submitted and students walk out of the exam hall, the relief and pride they feel are unmatched. It is the moment when effort transforms into accomplishment. That feeling alone makes the exam period special.

So yes – exam time may indeed be the best time of the semester. It is when learning intensifies, communities unite, and students grow in ways that shape their future far beyond the classroom.
