The Hydraulic Jump of The Gaza Citizen

In the cold, precise language of fluid mechanics, there exists a phenomenon of immense power and inevitable violence known as the hydraulic jump. It is, as defined in engineering texts, “an important example of local non-uniform flow” and a fundamental transition from shooting to tranquil flow . Theoretically, a smooth transition is impossible. As can be seen from the water surface profiles, there is no possibility of a smooth transition from shooting to tranquil flow since, theoretically, the slope of the water surface should be vertical as it passes through the critical depth. In practice, this cannot occur, and the transition takes the form of the hydraulic jump with a steep upward-sloping water surface and violently turbulent conditions accompanied by a substantial loss of energy .

This is not merely a lesson in physics; it is the brutal physical law being enacted upon the body and soul of the Gaza citizen. We are the flow in this catastrophic equation.

The Upstream Flow: A History of Building Pressure

We, the people of Gaza, are the flow upstream. Our history is deep, our roots ancient, mentioned in the Holy Quran as descendants of a mighty people. For centuries, we have existed, a stream of life, culture, and resilience. Yet, for decades, this flow has been violently constricted. The channel of our existence has been narrowed by walls and blockade, our depth shallowed by occupation, and our velocity,our potential for a peaceful life,radically accelerated into a state of perpetual crisis, hurtling towards an abyss.

This “shooting flow” of our reality is one of high velocity and low depth: a life stripped of dignity, hurtling towards an uncertain future. The mass per unit time flowing upstream is greater than the velocity downstream; there will be a change in the momentum of the stream per unit time as it passes through the jump . Our momentum, born of right and history, is now colliding with an immovable object.

The Forces Creating the Jump: A Multi-Directional Siege

The forces slowing down the stream and producing this change in momentum are immense. The resultant force, as in the hydraulic jump, is caused by the difference in the hydrostatic pressure from all sides .

From Israel: A relentless and overwhelming military pressure, a force aiming to channel, control, and ultimately, eradicate the flow itself. The statistics are a numbing litany of death: the occupation kills two medical staff every day, a journalist every three days, and causes 13 Palestinians to lose limbs every two days . It destroys 367 homes daily and has killed 18 students every single day since the war began . This is the engineering of our destruction.

· From the World: A global pressure of hypocrisy and political machinations. Regional media narratives often reflect “local political interests and social sensitivities as much as they reflect the grim reality of what is happening in Gaza” . Some nations speak of solidarity while leaving the door open for normalization with our oppressors, treating our annihilation as a political obstacle rather than a moral catastrophe .

· From Our Own Rulers (Hamas & Others Plantains Groups): An internal political pressure that exploits the flow’s energy for its own ideological ends, further complicating our path. As they jockey for position in the “day after” and engage in brutal internal policing , we, the citizens, are caught in the middle, our lives a bargaining chip in a game we did not choose.

All these entities press upon us, who are the descendants of the mighty. They are all, in effect, the obstruction on the apron, forcing a catastrophic transition .

The Inevitable Jump: The Violent Release of Pent-Up Energy

It is often desirable to be able to determine the position at which a hydraulic jump will occur. In the design of a spillway over a dam, the energy of the fast-flowing stream must be partially dissipated to prevent erosion of the bed .

The world has designed a dam of injustice around Gaza. The position at which the jump will occur naturally can be estimated using the equation of known upstream and downstream conditions . The upstream condition is over 75 years of oppression; the downstream condition is a world that offers no viable state, no justice, and no peace.

The jump is our resistance. It is steep, violently turbulent, and accompanied by a substantial loss of energy. This is the moment we are witnessing and living. This is the explosion of pain, the roar of a people who can no longer be contained. It takes the form of the citizen journalist, like Ahmed Hegazy or Salma Al-Qadoumi, who, with a mobile phone, becomes an “unseen soldier” in the battle of narratives, pulling stories from beneath the rubble so they are not buried with their owners . They work without official protection, their content censored, facing “physical risks, pressures of censorship, and ethical concerns about accuracy and verification” , yet they persist because “our martyrs are not numbers” .

The change in momentum is due to the difference in the resultant forces caused by the hydrostatic pressure at the downstream and the upstream cross-sections . Our pressure from upstream,our right to exist, our will to live,has finally met the immovable object of downstream pressure, and the jump is the inevitable, violent result.

Conclusion: A Tranquil Flow, or Merely a Different Kind of Torment?

The hydraulic jump is not the end of the flow; it is its transformation. It is a substantial loss of energy, a dissipation of the built-up pressure in a violent, chaotic, but necessary process .

For us, the Gaza citizens, this jump is our collective scream. It is the point at which our silent suffering erupts into a global spectacle. Yet, even as a fragile ceasefire is signed, the world wonders about the “day after” . They speak of reconstruction and administration while the fundamental pressures remain. The “steep upward-sloping water surface” of our jump is not a path to peace, but a desperate struggle for survival against the continued threat of being “stripped of weapons quickly and potentially with violence,” as threats from powerful leaders suggest .

The question is not if the jump would occur. The physics of history and human dignity had already determined that it must. The question now is whether the world will continue to be the obstruction that causes catastrophic erosion, or if it will finally provide the safe apron,the path to true freedom, justice, and a genuinely tranquil flow,for a people who have been forced to be giants, and have now, irrevocably, jumped.
