Official apology from the United Nations to Sudan
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Port Sudan summoned Ms. Gemma San Martin, the representative of the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, on Wednesday afternoon, October 22, 2025. The summon was in response to a report issued by the Resident Coordinator’s Office on humanitarian work in the country for September 2025. The report contained information the Ministry described as incorrect and misleading regarding government efforts to facilitate humanitarian activities and coordination with international organizations operating in Sudan.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Criticizes UN Humanitarian Report
The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its dissatisfaction with the content of the report, asserting that it did not reflect the actual cooperation between the government and UN humanitarian organizations, nor the national efforts made to facilitate aid access to those affected in various states. The Ministry stressed that the report unjustifiably ignored the extent of the facilities provided by the Sudanese authorities to overcome obstacles to humanitarian work, affirming that Sudan remains open to ongoing cooperation and coordination with international partners in this field.
UN Apology and Expected Correction of the Report
For her part, Gemma San Martin offered an official apology to the Sudanese government for the inaccurate information contained in the report, stressing that the error was not intentional and that she would work to correct it in coordination with the relevant UN authorities. She added that the Resident Coordinator’s Office would review the report to ensure the accuracy of the data in the revised version, noting at the same time the UN’s appreciation for the close cooperation shown by the Sudanese government in supporting and organizing humanitarian work.
Mutual assurances of continued cooperation
At the conclusion of the meeting, the UN representative affirmed that her country positively views the Sudanese government’s efforts to create a conducive environment for the work of international and regional organizations and facilitate their mission to deliver aid to those in need, especially in light of the exceptional circumstances the country is experiencing. The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reiterated its commitment to working in accordance with the principles of transparency and international cooperation, emphasizing the importance of ensuring accuracy in reports issued by UN agencies, given their direct impact on Sudan’s image in the international community.
