Minnawi discusses with the German Foreign Ministry ways to support peace, condemns militia violations
As part of his tours in the Federal Republic of Germany, Commander Minni Arko Minnawi, Governor of Darfur, met today, Thursday, August 21, with Ambassador Jessa Brautigam, Director of the Department for Sub-Saharan Africa and the Sahel at the German Foreign Ministry.
On the Sudanese side, the Governor was accompanied by Ambassador Idris Mohamed Ali, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the Sudanese Embassy in Berlin; Ahmed Yaqoub Sharif, Advisor to the Governor; and Advisor Imad Abdel Rahim.
On the German side, there were:
Mr. Sascha Kinsler, Deputy Director of the Department for East Africa and the Horn of Africa; Ms. Maxi Saern, Head of the Sudan and South Sudan File; and Lina Michelin, Representative of the Humanitarian Aid Division.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Governor expressed his deep thanks and appreciation to the Republic of Germany for its continued humanitarian support to the Sudanese people. He emphasized the need to expand and double this support to meet the needs of the voluntary return of refugees and displaced persons to their cities and villages, and to support the government’s efforts to restore basic services and normal life.
His Excellency also gave details on the critical humanitarian conditions in El Fasher due to the siege imposed by the militia and its mercenaries, which has resulted in the denial of humanitarian aid, as well as its looting and burning, in clear violations of international humanitarian law and Security Council resolutions.
The Governor called on Germany to unequivocally condemn these violations, emphasizing that a just and lasting peace in Sudan can only be achieved by halting foreign military and political support for the militias and adopting Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue as the only way to reach sustainable solutions.
The Governor emphasized that this meeting embodies the Sudanese government’s commitment to strengthening its relations with Germany, a key partner in the areas of relief, development, and peace.
He also highlighted the importance of the international community’s role in shouldering its responsibilities regarding the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and working together to alleviate the suffering of civilians.
For her part, Ambassador Jessa Brautigam affirmed Germany’s continued concern for the situation in Sudan and its commitment to continuing to provide humanitarian support through UN agencies and civil society organizations.
She also called for the immediate lifting of the siege on El Fasher, allowing unhindered humanitarian access, and working diligently to achieve peace and end the war.
The Governor of Darfur reiterated the Sudanese government’s full commitment to working with regional and international partners to achieve peace, support stability, and alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Sudanese people.
