African Peace and Security Council Shocks “Parallel Government”

The African Peace and Security Council expressed its deep concern and strong condemnation of the announcement by the Rapid Support Forces and their political and social allies of the formation of a parallel government in Sudan, warning that this move poses a serious threat that could lead to the division and destabilization of the country.

At the conclusion of its emergency meeting, the Council called on all African Union member states and the international community not to recognize any parallel government or illegitimate entity seeking to govern any part of Sudanese territory or its institutions, reaffirming the Union’s commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

The Council also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, facilitation of humanitarian access, and the entry into a comprehensive political dialogue aimed at restoring constitutional order and achieving stability in the country. The Council welcomed the appointment of Dr. Kamil El-Tayeb Idris as Prime Minister, calling on the African Union to enhance the protection of civilians and ensure accountability for human rights violations.
