Sovereignty Council Advisor Meets UNHCR Regional Director for East Africa

Lieutenant General Al-Sadig Ismail Mahmoud, Advisor to the Sovereignty Council for Organizations and Humanitarian Action, met today with Mamadou Diagne Balde, UNHCR Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes.
Mamadou Diagne Balde expressed his deep appreciation for the Sudanese government’s cooperation with UNHCR on refugee issues, noting the challenges facing Sudan due to the repercussions of the war.
The UNHCR Regional Director for East Africa explained that the meeting addressed the situation of Sudanese refugees abroad and the role UNHCR can play in this regard.
He pointed out that more than 4 million Sudanese have fled the ravages of war to neighboring countries. “We appreciate the stances of these countries, which have hosted large numbers of Sudanese and provided them with numerous services. We view this with great appreciation and are working in coordination with them to reach these refugees.”
Mamadou Diane Balde noted the voluntary return of Sudanese as a result of joint coordination between the government and partners.
