The AU condemns the attack on Port Sudan, deeming it a dangerous escalation
The African Union strongly condemned the attack on Port Sudan today, considering it “a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict and a direct threat to civilian lives, humanitarian access, and regional stability.”
In a statement issued today (Sunday) the African Union said it “learned with deep concern and dismay of the latest violent attack on Port Sudan, a strategic city that has remained one of the few relatively stable areas in the Republic of Sudan amid the ongoing conflict.”
The African Union said it “affirms its unwavering commitment to the protection of civilians and strongly condemns all actions that undermine peace efforts, disrupt humanitarian operations, or target critical infrastructure.”
The statement added: “Port Sudan has played a crucial role as a logistical and humanitarian hub amidst the ongoing conflict. Any attack targeting it not only threatens the safety of innocent people but also undermines efforts to achieve stability in the country.”
The African Union reiterated its “urgent call for an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of an inclusive, African-led political dialogue. It urges all parties to respect international humanitarian law, ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access, and commit to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.”
The African Union affirmed that it “continues, through its High-Level Implementation Panel on Sudan, to actively engage in efforts to facilitate dialogue, mediate between the parties, and support national, regional, and international peace initiatives. The African Union calls on all stakeholders to support African-led mediation and place the interests of the Sudanese people above all else.”
The African Union urged the international community to stand in solidarity with the Sudanese people and intensify efforts to restore peace and stability in Sudan. It stated that it will continue to closely monitor the situation and affirms its steadfast support for the people of Sudan in their quest for peace.
