Guterres’ Spokesperson Welcomes Appointment of Civilian Prime Minister in Sudan

The Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, said that the Secretary-General “takes note of the decree issued on May 19 by the Head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan, appointing Dr. Kamil El-Tayeb Idris as Prime Minister.

He added, “The Secretary-General hopes that this appointment will represent a first step towards inclusive consultations aimed at forming a broadly representative technocratic government and achieving peace.
He stressed the need to prioritize national consensus efforts and ensure that these efforts lead to tangible progress that benefits all the Sudanese people, including silencing the guns, providing basic services to the entire population, and laying the foundations for a shared vision for Sudan’s future.”

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, met in Baghdad, on the sidelines of his participation in the regular Arab Summit (34), with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and the Chairman of the African Union Commission, and the three of them discussed the situation in Sudan. Guterres also met with the head of the Sudanese delegation participating in the Arab Summit, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Jaber.
